Highlights From Our Week
National Poetry Month
Inasmuch as April is National Poetry month, we are celebrating this event by reading poetry with rhythm and rhyme! We will be reading poems in class which the children will be able to share with you when they bring them home.
We began the week by reading Crocodile’s Toothache by Shel Silverstein. Then the children watched the video, Crocodile’s Toothache. Laughter filled the room.

I introduced our next poem, The Alphabet Forwards and Backwards. While reading this poem, we concentrated on our rate and expression. As we continue to read poetry, we will also be focusing on accuracy and punctuation.
Wizard Of Oz
The conclusion of our fairy tale unit commenced on Monday. The children entered the classroom through a rainbow of colored streamers which led to a yellow brick road as they listened to the song, Follow the Yellow Brick Road. Our future discussions of The Wizard Of Oz will center on the story elements, character traits, and how the characters' identities evolve.
Our read-aloud, The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz by L. Frank Baum has captivated children through the years, as Dorothy and Toto seem lost forever when a tornado whirls them both away. Dorothy and Toto land in a magical world. I paired this reading with video clips from the movie. The tornado inspired curiosity which led to meaningful questions. For example, “What is a tornado?”, “Are tornadoes stronger than hurricanes?” and “How do tornadoes start?”

In order to further understand the above questions, we conducted a tornado demonstration.
The children learned that spinning the bottle in a circular motion creates a water vortex which looks like a mini tornado, as illustrated in the pictures below.
Writer's Workshop Update
As the children write, they use numerous strategies to help them with spelling. The word wall is available for them to access the lovie words/high frequency words. In addition, Jolly Phonics sound cards assist the children in recalling the sounds we have studied. Prior to their writing exercise, the children counted out how many words are in their sentences and then used highlighters for lines.
Read To Self
We continue to build our reading stamina. The children have successfully progressed to six minutes.
Through various fine motor activities, the children are practicing the proper direction and formation of numbers one through ten.
Exploring Addition
The children explored the concept of addition by joining objects together. In order to demonstrate this concept, the children participated in several activities.
"How many syllables are in your name?"
"How many letters are in your name?"
"How many people are in your family?"
Please ask your child how to play the wonderful game "Shake and Spill."
It's All About Choice
During our kindergarten day, the children have multiple opportunities to choose activities that interest them. Through the Seesaw app, your child captures and shares what he/she may have participated in that particular day.
Enjoy the beautiful weather weekend.
