HIghlights From Our Week
Exciting News!
Next week we are expecting a delivery of hen's eggs. Stay tuned for further developments.
Read To Self
Our beautiful weather provided a perfect outdoor setting for read to self. Under blue skies, the children discovered comfortable spots which contributed to their ability to increase their reading stamina to ten minutes.
Our Poetry Month Continues
Alan Katz, songwriter and comedy writer, creates ludicrous lyrics to traditional tunes in take me out of the bathtub. Illustrator and cartoonist David Catrow provides us with hilarious pictures to enjoy. One of our favorite poems from this collection is Food Fight. The children also thoroughly enjoyed watching and singing along to the Food Fight video. Please click below to view this video.
Wizard of Oz Fairytale Study
.Our Wizard of Oz study concludes with a closer look at both the Lion and Dorothy's character traits. Inasmuch as the Lion needs courage, we discussed the definition of this word as shown below.
The wonderful read-alouds below also examined the concept of courage and bravery and therefore, reinforced the children’s understanding through numerous examples.
The examples evidenced in the read-alouds presented an introduction to our writing activity.
Prior to our discussion of Dorothy’s character, I explained to the children the definition of perseverance. The children observed how determined Dorothy was to return to her home in Kansas.
I asked the children for their examples of perseverance as evidenced below.
Ruby Red Slippers/Ruby Red Sneakers Wish
At the conclusion of The Wizard of Oz , Dorothy finally learns that she has always had the power to return home by closing her eyes and clicking her heels three times. This prompted the children to write their own wish if they had ruby red slippers or ruby red sneakers. The children drew themselves wearing their choice of slippers/sneakers.
Jolly Phonics Digraph /th/
We have now completed the /ch/, /sh/, and /th/ consonant digraphs. The children will be participating in numerous word work activities in order to reinforce their understanding of these digraphs. On Seesaw, your child has recorded the blending process of reading their new words. Please continue to celebrate his/her successful ability to decode.
It's All About the Story Problem
I read a story problem to the class. We reviewed the multiple strategies that I previously introduced in order to solve equations. These strategies consisted of a number line, a ten frame, unifix cubes, and fingers. This week I provided the children with an additional strategy; draw a picture to illustrate the equation.
Then the children practiced drawing the equation on their tables, as well as, utilizing the number line and ten frame in order to solve the equation.
Our week always involves student choice and student interest...
