Highlights From Our Week
Empathy is a skill that anyone can build, but why is it so important? In the first chapter of this three part video series, Mojo and the Class Dojo monsters perform a school musical. However, they encounter a large obstacle as Mojo's self-confidence gets in the way. Once you have viewed this video, please participate in the discussion questions below.
All About Pumpkins
This week we have read numerous books about pumpkins. After reading these stories, we participated in a pumpkin investigation as evidenced by the chart below.
Why Play Math Games?
Math games give children opportunities to explore fundamental number concepts, such as counting sequence, one-to-one correspondence, and computation strategies. Engaging mathematical games can also encourage students to explore number combinations, place value, patterns, and other important mathematical concepts. In addition, they afford opportunities for children to deepen their mathematical understanding and reasoning. This week the children were introduced to the math game, Clockominoes.
Directions for playing Clockominoes:
- Select a domino.
- Count how many pips are on the domino and place it on the Clockomino paper.
- If you get a domino that has the same number of pips as one that is already on your paper, place it behind the original domino.
- The domino without pips goes in the middle of the Clockomino.
- Play it more than once for number combinations and addition practice.
Jolly Phonics Review Week
Why are sorts important? When children sort beginning consonant sounds and vowels, they are engaged in the active process of searching, comparing, contrasting and analyzing. Vowels are developmentally difficult. Therefore, the children were given a sort to help them differentiate between the /a/ and /i/ vowel sounds.
After the children completed the /ck/, /e/, and /h/ sort, they read the pictures to a friend to make sure the pictures were placed under the correct headings. I have sent home the sorts which your child completed in school. It is important that your child explains to you how he/she sorted the pictures. Your child should also read the pictures to you.
Our website now includes "Curriculum Resources." It is a drop-down menu where you can select various activities and resources. This will provide an excellent opportunity to reinforce what we have studied in our classroom. In order to access the Jolly Phonics sorts for review and our new math game, Clockominoes, you can print them directly from the specific resource.
