Highlights From Our Week
This week we continued discussing the concept of “growth mindset” as we watched the Mojo’s Mindset Video 2. In this video, Mojo enters a robotic competition. He attempts to make a robot, but gives up when he makes numerous mistakes. Fortunately, his friend Katie teaches him the importance of mistakes.

The children have also acquired the knowledge that when they make a mistake, their brain is getting exercise and “lighting up.” When you learn from mistakes, your brain works harder, and therefore, grows stronger. In addition, this video prepares us for our “Cardboard Challenge” which we will celebrate on Thursday, October 6th.
The Global Cardboard Challenge invites children around the world of all ages to build something amazing out of cardboard, recycled materials, and the use of imagination as we celebrate a child’s creativity.

The book entitled Rosie Revere, Engineer also teaches the life lesson of not quitting. Rosie may appear quiet during the day, but at night she's a brilliant inventor of gizmos and gadgets who dreams of becoming a great engineer. When her great-great-aunt Rose (Rosie the Riveter) comes for a visit, she mentions her desire to fly. Therefore, Rosie sets to work building a contraption to make her aunt's dream come true. However, when her contraption doesn't fly but rather hovers for a moment and then crashes, Rosie deems the invention a failure. Aunt Rose disagrees and instead congratulates Rosie on her first try. Aunt Rose explains to Rosie that you can only truly fail if you quit.
After reading Rosie Revere, Engineer the children participated in a STEM challenge. The purpose of our STEM challenge is to engage students and equip them with critical thinking, problem solving, and creative and collaborative skills.
The STEM challenge I presented to the class was to build a structure that is one yard tall and could balance and hold one apple. The children were encouraged to use any of the building materials in our classroom. Once the children achieved this goal, then they worked to improve their engineering designs as they participated in the Day 2 and Day 3 Challenges.

Day 2: The same challenge as Day 1 with different materials.
Day 3: Participate in a group with two or three children and add varied building materials.
During writer’s workshop, I read A Squiggly Story, which tells the story of a young boy who wants to write a story, just like his big sister. However, even though the young boy knows his letters, he doesn't know many words. He learns from his sister that every story starts with a single word and every word starts with a letter. The boy begins with an easy letter, the letter “I”. His story begins to grow from that one skinny letter. The young boy discovers that all of us, including him, have what we need to write our own story.
We talked about writing a story by first drawing a detailed picture/illustration. After their illustration is complete, the children label their detailed picture. Writing the first sound they hear, as well as any other sounds, provides an introduction to writing.

Our New Jolly Phonics Sounds /i/ and /p/.
We blended the sounds and read the words.
