On Monday when the children entered the classroom, they noticed that their classroom library contained numerous versions of The Three Billy Goats Gruff as well as St. Patrick’s Day Books. Discussions first centered around the new upcoming fairy tale, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, which was new to many of the children. In recognition of St. Patrick’s Day this Friday, the children related their own stories of tricky leprechauns. This lively discussion led to our first Irish Folktale, FIN M’COUL THE GIANT OF KNOCKMANY HILL.,
This folktale about the popular Irish giant, Fin M’Coul, also includes his wife Oonagh. Her quick thinking and cleverness brings a great deal of fun to this story. Please ask your child to relate the problem and solution in this folktale.
When we returned from our bathroom and drink break, we noticed a window in our classroom was partly opened and there was a letter from Lenny the Leprechaun. In addition, Lenny left us a shamrock, but forgot his hat. The room was filled with screams! I read the letter from Lenny which contained facts about himself and a request to the children to tell him about them.
The children wrote him a letter in order to respond to his request. Their letters also comprised drawings of themselves and illustrations filled with rainbows and gold.

We enjoyed singing along with the video, Counting with a Leprechaun. Please click on the picture below.
We read supplementary folktales about leprechauns. The children enjoyed the tales about the quick witted and mischievous leprechauns.
These folktales set the stage for our challenge.
Leprechaun Challenge
In celebration of St. Patrick's Day, the children participated in a directed drawing activity. The children followed along as they drew a leprechaun. Please click here to view the video.
Our Fairy Tale Study Continues...
THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF
THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF
We read the first version of the fairytale, THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF by Paul Galdone., Our discussion focused on the story elements as evidenced in the completed chart below.
Then we read additional versions of The Three Billy Goats Gruff as shown below.
The children thoroughly enjoyed a video of this fairytale. Please click below to watch The Three Billy Goats Gruff.
Prior to our STEAM challenge, we experimented with wood blocks as a model for our bridge.
STEAM CHALLENGE
I presented the children with the following challenge: to build a bridge for the three billy goats that needed to suspend over the river and support the three billy goats.
Once the children successfully completed their challenge, they engaged in additional activities. The first activity involved creating a troll out of Play-Doh which provided an opportunity to use their imagination, as well as to strengthen their fine motor skills.
The next activity enabled the children to further their storytelling skills, enrich their language development, and develop their comprehension skills as they presented their second puppet show. Their presentation of The Three Billy Goats Gruff provided a great deal of entertainment.
